Our Responsibility

The UN Sustainable Development Goals are our guiding compass. This valuable framework adopted internationally in 2015 is a global plan of action to tackle climate change, ensure decent working conditions for all and support responsible consumption. The goals help us to consider and identify our areas of greatest impact and determine achievable actions that can enable us to make a difference in the world.
We aim to reduce our social and environmental impact through inspiring behavioural change in our consumers, responsible manufacturing, product innovation, packaging and recycling, climate action and are supported on our journey by our ongoing partnership with reputable UK organisations such as OPRL and Products Of Change.
We have taken the 1st steps in realising our responsibilities as a Brand & over the coming weeks we will begin to outline our Sustainability Development Goals, starting with an introductory session with Jenni. This will underpin all our decisions going forward as we adopt sustainability into our everyday communication.
Over the coming months we will start the process of reviewing all aspects of our product & packaging, manufacturing & shipping methods & how we can improve our communication to consumers at the end of a product’s life in order to reduce our impact on the environment.
Specifically for Polar Gear Collections…
All our products are durable & reusable.
We have recently adopted a new brand vision, which you will begin to see appear in presentations & visuals for B2B communication.
You will see that we are no longer developing a conserve collection, instead we will look to incorporate sustainability into our NPD decision process, choosing to adopt materials & trims made from durable &/or recycled/ sustainable sources. Within our collections we will invite consumers to ‘buy once, buy well’, enabling consumers to ‘choose to reuse’.
Our aim is to develop more concise collections with longevity, evergreen & inclusive design for broad consumer appeal.

Elevate the everyday, inspiring positive changes for a better life
packaging and recycling
We aim to reduce the environmental impacts of our activities through packaging and recycling.
We avoid excess packaging, using only what is necessary. With what we do use, we are reducing the weight of packaging wherever possible, using recyclable materials and switching to plastic-free alternatives.
In 2020 we became members of OPRL and use their clear labelling system to signpost our consumers how to recycle our packaging at home in the UK.
Carbon footprint
The biggest sustainability challenge facing the world today is climate change and we all have a collective responsibility to play our part to reduce carbon emissions.
polar gear have committed to the global emissions goal – carbon neutrality for owned operations by 2030 as well as committing to work to reduce our Scope 3 emissions. Reducing our overall impact will involve a revaluation of the processes along our value chain and resource efficient transportation is a key priority for us.
2020 has led to new ways of doing business, such as on-line meetings and home working which has had a climate positive impact.
Partnership and education
We are proud to be members of Products of Change. We believe that open collaboration, the exchange of ideas, knowledge and experience supports the continuous learning required to help us all achieve the level of change needed to meet our collective goals.
We also support the continuous sustainability learning of our team through attendance and networking at the annual Sustainability in Licensing Conference and executive development through the Cambridge CISL course in Sustainability Management for Business.
Product Innovation
Our products are durable, reusable products that help consumers avoid the use of single-use plastics which degrade our natural environment. We use a range of materials across our product ranges including metals, polyester fabrics and some plastics.
To achieve more sustainable materials we will seek to understand how we can adopt circular economy principles to design out waste and to re-cycle and re-use raw materials as input for production. For example, fabrics like r-PET close the loop on single-use plastics, recycling plastic bottles to make polyester fabric. Partnerships with leading plastic materials manufacturers such as Eastman are key to unlocking innovation to accelerate the circular economy.
We believe that it is important to avoid greenwashing and we thoroughly evaluate product solutions in order to ensure that if we offer a product as environmentally sustainable that we can back up that claim. For example any products made with recycled materials must be certified under the Global Recycled Standard.
